Pricing and quote questions
How much do new gutters cost?
The cost of new gutters depends on the total footage, gutter size, downspout size, number of downspouts, height of the home, removal of old gutters, repairs, access, and whether gutter protection is being added. You can always use our free Online Gutter Estimator for a rough starting point, but the most accurate number comes from having us look at the home, measure the job, and see what the work actually needs.
How much do 5-inch gutters cost?
5-inch gutters are a common choice for many homes, but the final price depends on the home’s layout, gutter footage, downspout locations, height, fascia condition, and whether old gutters need to be removed. Our Online Gutter Estimator can give you a rough idea. For the most accurate quote, we recommend scheduling a visit so we can look at the job in person.
How much do 6-inch gutters cost?
6-inch gutters usually cost more than 5-inch gutters because they use larger gutter material and are often paired with larger 3x4 downspouts. They can be a better option for larger roof areas, steep roofs, long runs, heavy water flow, or homes that have had overflow problems. Our Online Gutter Estimator can give you a rough idea, and we can look at the home to tell you whether 6-inch gutters make sense or whether 5-inch gutters are enough.
Why do you need to look at the job before giving a final price?
Every home is different. The footage, roofline, height, access, downspout locations, existing gutter condition, and repair needs can all change the price. Looking at the job lets us quote the work correctly instead of guessing or giving a number that changes later.
How do I compare gutter quotes?
Not every gutter quote includes the same work. When comparing prices, it helps to look at the full scope: gutter size, downspout size, number of downspouts, removal of old gutters, repairs, gutter protection, cleanup, insurance, and who is doing the work. If you have another quote, we’re glad to help you compare what is included so you can make a good decision. Sometimes the difference is simply the scope of work, and sometimes important details may not be listed clearly on the estimate.
Leaves, cleaning, and underground drains
Do gutter guards help with leaves and underground drains?
Gutter guards are mainly used to help keep leaves and larger debris out of the gutter system. They can also help keep debris from washing into underground drains, which may reduce clogs in buried drain lines. They do not mean a gutter system will never need attention, but they can reduce how often gutters need to be cleaned, especially on homes with trees nearby. The best option depends on the roof, trees, gutter size, and what kind of maintenance problem you are trying to solve.
Will gutter guards mean I never clean my gutters again?
No. We do not sell gutter guards as maintenance-free magic. The goal is to reduce debris buildup, reduce how often gutters need attention, and help keep leaves and larger debris from filling the gutter or washing into underground drains.
Long-term gutter value
How long should a properly installed gutter system last?
A properly installed aluminum gutter system can last for many years with normal maintenance and care. Our goal is not to sell a system that keeps causing problems. We would rather install it correctly, size it properly, place the downspouts where they make sense, and give the home a gutter system that can serve the customer for the long run.
Why do some customers call McCloud Gutter again years later?
Many return calls come from customers who bought another home, want to add gutter protection, need cleaning or maintenance, had storm or tree damage, or are upgrading part of the system. That is the kind of repeat business we like: not because the original work failed, but because the customer trusted us enough to call again.
Gutter sizing and downspouts
When is a 5-inch gutter usually enough?
On a small shed, small house, short gutter run, or roofline that does not carry a heavy amount of water, 5-inch gutters are often enough. The right answer depends on roof area, run length, roof pitch, valleys, and how quickly water can get to the downspouts.
When does a 6-inch gutter make sense?
A 6-inch K-style gutter can make sense on larger roof areas, longer runs, steep roofs, metal roofs, or valleys where a lot of water comes together. For K-style gutters, 6-inch gutters are commonly described as carrying roughly 40% to 67% more water than 5-inch gutters depending on the exact profile, slope, outlet size and how capacity is measured.
Can you use 3x4 downspouts with 5-inch gutters?
Yes. Sometimes the gutter itself is not the whole problem. If a 5-inch gutter is close to enough but the water needs to get out faster, a larger 3x4 downspout on a 5-inch gutter can be a good option.
Does a 6-inch gutter with a 2x3 downspout give full benefit?
Not really. A bigger gutter still needs enough outlet and downspout capacity. If water cannot leave the gutter fast enough, the system can still back up or overflow.
Why does the outlet hole matter?
The downspout size only helps if the outlet is cut correctly. A 3x4 downspout installed over a small 2x3-style hole does not give the same benefit as a true 3x4 outlet. We see this mistake on some systems where the customer paid for larger downspouts but did not get the full water-flow benefit.
Are 3x4 downspouts twice the size of 2x3 downspouts?
By simple opening area, yes. A 2x3 downspout is about 6 square inches, and a 3x4 downspout is about 12 square inches. That is roughly double the opening area, assuming the outlet is cut to match.
Do larger gutters or downspouts fix leaf problems?
No. Larger gutters and larger downspouts help move water, but they do not solve leaves, pine needles, roof debris, or gutter-clogging problems. Debris problems need cleaning, better maintenance, or the right gutter protection system.
Do you offer round downspouts?
In some instances, McCloud Gutter can offer 4-inch round downspouts as a special request. They are not part of normal bidding and are usually discussed when the project style or situation calls for them.
Gutter guards and gutter protection / gutter guard systems
Are gutter guards maintenance-free?
No. We do not believe in selling gutter guards as maintenance-free magic. Every gutter protection system may need some maintenance at some point. The goal is to reduce clogging and maintenance, not pretend maintenance disappears forever.
Can McCloud Gutter mix gutter guard systems?
Sometimes, yes. Some homes have different rooflines, tree coverage, valleys, or debris conditions in different areas. A mixed or hybrid gutter protection setup can sometimes be more cost-effective while still giving the homeowner the performance they need.
What gutter guard systems do you install?
McCloud Gutter installs gutter protection / gutter guard systems such as S-Flo, ProFlow, Hydro Flo and hybrid setups depending on the home, gutter system, roofline, debris type, and budget.
Should dirty gutters be cleaned before installing gutter guards?
Yes. Gutters should be cleaned and checked before gutter guards are installed. If a gutter is loose, pitched wrong, clogged, damaged, or undersized, those issues need to be addressed first.
When are gutter guards worth discussing?
Gutter guards are worth discussing when leaves, pine needles, roof debris, or repeated clogs are causing overflow, water damage, frequent cleanings, or customer frustration.
Can gutter guards help protect underground drains?
Yes. Gutter protection / gutter guards can help keep leaves, pine needles and debris from washing down the downspouts and into underground drain lines. That matters because buried drains can clog, back up, and sometimes require digging or replacement if debris builds up badly enough.
Why do gutters clog faster without gutter guards?
Without gutter protection, debris can move through the gutter and collect at one small downspout outlet. Once that outlet clogs, the gutter can fail or overflow quickly. A gutter protection system gives debris a much larger top surface area to collect on, which can reduce how often the gutters need to be cleaned.
Should gutter problems be repaired before gutter guards are installed?
Usually yes. If a gutter is loose, damaged, pitched wrong, or has bad fascia behind it, we recommend addressing that before installing gutter guards. If the customer still wants guards installed on an existing system, we explain the limitations so the decision is informed.
Cleaning, repair and replacement
What if my gutters are overflowing?
Overflowing gutters are not always a major gutter failure. Many times the gutters are simply dirty. Other times the underground drains are stopped up, the downspouts are undersized, the outlets are too small, or the gutter system is not pitched or sized correctly.
Do I need cleaning, repair or replacement?
Cleaning is often the first step when the cause is not obvious. Once debris is removed, it is easier to see if the gutter is leaking, pulling loose, pitched wrong, damaged, undersized, or actually needs replacement.
Can loose gutters be repaired?
Sometimes, but the cause matters. If older spike-and-ferrule gutters keep pulling loose, tightening them again and again may not solve the problem. In some cases, the fascia board is damaged or the old fastening style has contributed to water getting behind the gutter.
When do you recommend replacing old spike-style gutters?
If older spiked gutters are loose, allowing water back toward the fascia, or causing repeated problems, replacement is often the better recommendation. A new gutter system with proper hangers can be better for the home than repeatedly tightening a failing old system.
Do you replace fascia board?
If fascia is rotten or not holding the gutter properly, that needs to be addressed before the gutter system can be installed or reattached correctly. McCloud Gutter can discuss fascia-related issues when they affect the gutter job.
Do overflowing gutters always mean I need new gutters?
No. If the gutter is overflowing because debris is packed around the downspout or outlet, cleaning may be the right first step. Once the gutter is cleaned, we can see whether the system handles the next rain or whether there is still a sizing, outlet, pitch, downspout, fascia or underground drain issue.
What if the underground drain is clogged?
If water is backing out of the downspout or underground drain, the buried drain line may be the problem instead of the gutter itself. We try to point that out so the homeowner understands why water is not leaving the area properly.
Do small repairs always require replacing all the gutters?
No. Sometimes the right repair is one gutter section, one downspout section, a few hangers, a corrected outlet, or a properly sealed corner. Small jobs may still have a minimum service charge, but that does not mean every situation requires a full replacement.
What happens if bad fascia is found after the gutter is removed?
Sometimes fascia damage is hidden behind the gutter and cannot be fully seen until the gutter is removed or a repair is attempted. If we find bad fascia, we explain what was found, charge for the work already performed, and readdress the cost and options before moving forward.
Quotes, pricing and recommendations
Is the online estimate tool a final price?
No. The online estimate tool is a starting estimate. Height, access, number of stories, gutter footage, downspouts, gutter guards, removal, repairs, fascia condition, and job conditions can change the final quote.
How does your sales process work?
We come out, assess the gutter issues, explain what we see, and figure up a price for the work. You can ask questions about the job, the options, the gutter size, downspouts, repairs, or gutter protection. Then we give you the price and let you decide whether you want to move forward.
Why not just give a price and leave?
Just giving a price without explaining the options does not help homeowners make a good decision. If you ask more questions, we can give better answers. Our goal is to offer enough information so you can choose the best gutter system for your home and budget.
Are you insured?
Yes. McCloud Gutter carries General Liability and Workers’ Compensation insurance. That matters because gutter work involves ladders, rooflines, homes, vehicles and property.
What happens after I approve a quote?
After a quote is approved, any required deposit or scheduling step helps reserve the job and move it toward the schedule. We try to keep the process simple by sending quotes by text or email so customers can review and approve when they are ready.
Will you tell me if I do not need the most expensive option?
Yes. If cleaning, a repair, or a smaller system makes sense, we will explain that. If the customer wants an upgrade for color, appearance, or capacity, we can discuss that too. The goal is to match the work to what the home needs and what the customer wants.
